The first Ethiopian delegation to arrive in the United States was in 1919 in Chicago.  The purpose of the meeting was to renew the 1904 Treaty of Amity (Friendship) between the U. S. and Ethiopia.

Lead by Empress Zawditu (eldest daughter of Emperor Menelik), she and her group traveled to Washington D.C. to meet with President Woodrow Wilson in what became known as the Abyssinian Mission (the Ethiopian Empire was historically known as Abyssinian).
