The first African-American to achieve the rank of International Grandmaster in Chess. Born in Jamaica in 1966, he moved to the United States at the age of 12 and began playing chess at 14.
He attained the title of National Master in 1986 and proceeded to rise up the ranks to achieve the title of International Grandmaster in 1999. And in 2003 he was named "Grandmaster of the Year" by the U.S. Chess Federation.
