The 442nd Regimental Combat Team was the most decorated unit of its size in the U.S. Army during World War II, with a roughly 4000-strong unit consisting of Japanese-Americans, mostly from Hawaii and some recruited from the internment camps where Japanese were incarcerated during the war.

The U.S. government created the 442nd Regimental Combat Team in 1943 after the fear of Japanese=Americans had largely subsided. President Franklin D. Roosevelt supported the idea of an all-Japanese-American fighting unit, declaring, "Americanism was not, and never was, a matter of race and ancestry" - unfortunately, it was a contradiction to his order to incarcerated 112,000 Japanese Americans whose loyalty had never been questioned. The unit established their motto and battle cry "Go for broke!"
